2017 WRT Grace Warrior Ministries Georgia Open - Rounds of 32 & 16

The top seven seeds are through to the quarterfinals at the 2017 World Racquetball Tour (WRT) Grace Warrior Ministries Georgia Open in Lilburn, Georgia, but joining them is 25th seed Kevin Vazquez, who defeated 8th seed Luis Avila, 10-15, 15-8, 11-6, in the Round of 32 and then followed that up with a win over 24th seed Set Cubillos, 15-9, 15-13.

In the quarters, Vazquez will be up against top seed and WRT #1 Alejandro Cardona. After a bye in the 32s, Cardona beat Maurice Miller, 15-6, 15-6, in the Round of 16.

We anticipated that Jake Bredenbeck and Mario Mercado would play in the Round of 16, and they did, but it wasn’t as close as we thought it would be, as Bredenbeck won in two straight games, defeating Mercado, 15-9, 15-8. Bredenbeck will play 2nd seed David Horn, winner over Shane Karmelin, 15-6, 15-13, in the 16s. Bredenbeck and Horn are very familiar with each other, as they played doubles together last month at the Pan American Championships, earning silver medals for Team USA.

You can view the action live from Lilburn starting with the quarterfinals at 10 AM Saturday morning via the WRT website.

2017 LPRT Guadalajara Grand Slam - Preview

The Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT’s) plays a Grand Slam event in Guadalajara, Mexico this weekend, and there are 27 players in the draw, including the top 9 players and 16 of the top 17. LPRT #1 Paola Longoria will be the player to beat, but her main opponents are all on the other side of the draw, where LPRT #2 Frédérique Lambert, #3 Jessica Parrilla, #6 Rhonda Rajsich, who defeated Longoria last month at the Pan American Championships, #7 Samantha Salas, a two time finalist this season, as well as 15th seed Gabriela Martinez, who was runner up to Longoria at last year’s International Racquetball Federation World Championships, will all battle it out to presumably meet Longoria in the final.

Lambert may have the worst draw of the bunch, as she’ll likely have to play Martinez in the Round of 16, Salas in the quarterfinals, and then either Parrilla or Rajsich in the semi-finals before getting a crack at Longoria.

Also of note, Sofia Rascon, a top 10 player last year, is in the draw as the 21st seed, so she’ll play Natalia Mendez first with the winner to face 5th seed Cristina Amaya.

You can watch this weekend’s action live via the LPRT LiveStream channel. The Round of 16 begins at 2 PM on Friday, with the quarterfinals on Saturday from 10 AM on and the semi-finals at 5 and 6 PM. The singles final will be 2 PM Sunday with the doubles final to follow.

Waselenchuk completes undefeated season, winning at 2017 IRT Florida Pro-Am

Kane Waselenchuk completed an undefeated season Saturday, as International Racquetball Tour’s (IRT’s) #1 season defeated Rocky Carson, 11-8, 11-8, 11-2, in the final of the 2017 Florida Pro-Am in Sarasota, Florida. Waselenchuk not only won all of his matches this season, but he didn’t lose any game. None. Zero.

That’s an incredible feat.

Waselenchuk almost dropped games in the semi-finals to Jose Rojas, as he needed extra points to win both the first and third games, winning 12-10, 11-4, 12-10. In the first game, Rojas was up 10-4, and served for the game five times. Yet Waselenchuk denied him each time.

Four of those denials were the result of winning backhand service returns, including a great pinch shot that came as Rojas had hit a drive Z serve to the right side that Waselenchuk - a left-hander - hit before the ball reached the right side wall, hitting it into the right side wall so that it went low off the front wall for a winner.

This season Waselenchuk was extended to 12-10 on four occasions with Rojas doing it three of those times, and twice on Saturday. Andree Parrilla also lost a game 12-10 to Waselenchuk in March at the Shamrock Shootout in Lombard, Illinois.

Alvaro Beltran is the last player to take a game off of Waselenchuk, which happened in May 2016 at the Coast to Coast Open in Reseda, California.

In the other semi-final, Carson defeated Beltran, 1-11, 11-4, 11-2, 11-4.
