2016 LPRT 11th Annual Winter Classic - Semi-finals and Quarterfinals

Frédérique Lambert will have a chance to be a double winner Sunday at the Ladies Professional Racquetball Tour (LPRT) 11th Annual Winter Classic in Overland Park, Kansas. But LPRT #1 Paola Longoria will be her opponent in the singles final, and in the doubles final Lambert and Sofia Rascon will face US Open finalists Alexandra Herrera and Monserrat Meija.

Lambert, the 3rd seed in singles, upset 2nd seed Rhonda Rajsich in the semi-finals, 13-11, 11-5, 11-7, to advance to her first final of the season.

Longoria advanced to the singles final by defeating Herrera in the semi-finals, 11-5, 11-2, 12-10. It was the second match in a row that Longoria was forced to extra points in the third game, as Masiel Rivera extended game three in their quarterfinal match before Longoria won 11-3, 11-2, 12-10.

Lambert might take some hope from that, although she’ll need to play closer with Longoria in the final than either Herrera or Rivera in their respective matches. She’ll need some hope to defeat Longoria, who’s unbeaten this season.

In doubles, Lambert and Rascon defeated Adriana Riveros and Masiel Rivera, 15-8, 15-12, in the semi-finals to get to the final with Herrera and Meija, who were winners over Rajsich and Carla Muñoz, 15-14, 7-15, 11-8.

In the breaker, Meija hit the most winners with 12, while Herrera and Muñoz had 9 each and Rajsich 6. However, Rajsich also made the fewest errors with 2, while Muñoz had the most at 5 with Herrera and Meija making 3 each. The winner/error difference favored Herrera and Meija, although they were also called for two penalty hinders.

Rajsich and Muñoz fought off two match points at 10-8, but couldn’t score themselves before the lefthander Herrera ended the match with a forehand pinch to the front left corner.
