Gutierrez wins WRT Pleasanton Open

Polo Gutierrez defeated Alejandro Cardona, 15-8, 15-8, Sunday to capture the World Racquetball Tour (WRT) Pleasanton Open title in Pleasanton, California. The win solidifies Gutierrez’s position as the #1 WRT player. Cardona remains #2.

Gutierrez jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one, and maintained control throughout that game, as he extended the lead to 11-3. Cardona did get some points at the end, so had some momentum going into game two.

In game two, they were close early with Cardona holding a lead at 5-2. Gutierrez tied it at 5-5, and never trailed after that. Cardona did draw within one of Gutierrez at 9-8, but failed to score any more points after that.

As in his semi-final, Gutierrez drove serve throughout the match, using his more typical half lob serves on second serve.

It was a classic battle of power - in Cardona - versus control - in Gutierrez, and control won, as Gutierrez made some great shots, including the match winning forehand that he hit cross court while falling over to his right. The ball rolled out, and the match was over.

The next WRT event will be the Midwest Championships in Minnesota, May 1-3.
