PARC - 2013 Pan American Championships - Elimination round begins

The elimination rounds began today at the 2013 Pan American Championships in Cali, Colombia, and so far the results are mostly as expected. One exception to that could be Bolivian Jenny Daza's win over Colombian Cristina Amaya, 7-15, 15-4, 11-6, in the Round of 16, as Amaya's the 11th ranked player on the Ladies Pro Racquetball Tour (LPRT).

Another close match on the women's side was between Costa Rican Melania Sauma Masis and Guatemalan Maria Rene Rodriguez, which went the Costa Rican's way in a tie-breaker, 15-13, 10-15, 11-7.

All four of the top women's seeds - Paola Longoria (Mexico), Rhonda Rajsich (USA), Samantha Salas (Mexico), and Sharon Jackson (USA) - have all advanced to the quarter finals.

However, Jackson will be in tough in the quarters as she faces former top 4 women's pro Angela Grisar of Chile with the winner advancing to the semi-finals against either Longoria or Carolina Gomez of Colombia.

No upsets in the first round of men's singles play, and only once match went to a tie-breaker as Daniel Maggi (Argentina) beat Santiago Canedo (Chile), 15-8, 12-15, 11-1.

But in the Round of 16, Felipe Mercado of Bolivia upset American Jansen Allen, 15-13, 6-15, 11-9, to move on to the quarter finals. Mercado will play Shai Manzuri (Argentina) who beat Luis Perez (Dominican Rep.), 15-5, 15-11 in the 16s.

Also, in the 16s, Polo Gutierrez won the Mexican showdown with Javier Moreno, 15-12, 15-12.

The International Racquetball Federation (IRF) is streaming matches live from Cali via its website.
